Steinway & Sons - Model 'A'

Steinway & Sons model A, Arts & Crafts, restored by Cambridge Pianoforte

A Steinway & Sons model A grand piano that was re-cased for Sir Robert Bird in 1905. The piano was manufactured in Hamburg in the same year, 1905, but the body was changed to fit the Arts & Crafts style with words taken from the Nativity Ode by John Milton.

The piano was in very poor condition when it was received into the workshop.  Veneer damage, the lyre was falling apart and the piano generally sound tired and worn out. The restoration took the best part of a year with the case needing time to enable our polisher to source the best materials.

The action was replaced on this one with a new Steinway & Sons action from Hamburg. Whenever we replace parts, they are always replaced where possible with copies of the original from the manufacturer.

The result was an instrument that caught the eye and played as if new. The advantage of rebuilding a Steinway is that the design has not changed in basic design in 100 years. There have been improvements mad, but the action is the basically the same and you can fit a new one to and older piano and achieve the touch and feel of a new Steinway.
