ACOUSTIC V DIGITAL |
The question of whether to buy an acoustic or digital piano is often asked. In reality it is not a true contest because they each have an entirely different list of advantages. Digital pianos are lighter in weight and thus easier to move, they can be used with headphones and have a midi interface to connect with other electronic instruments or computers. There is a variety of sounds and they are usually lower in price - a fine list of strengths.
The acoustic piano is, however, the original and genuine article. It produces a true living sound from vibrating strings amplified by the timber soundboard. The intricate and beautifully designed action of the piano is vastly superior in touch sensitivity. Long term value retention is strong.
It really depends on where your priorities lie. If practical matters such as annoying neighbours (even other family members) or financial constraints are a crucial part of the decision, the digital may be a wise choice. However the very fact the traditional piano is alive and thriving, is a good indication that for the true musician of sensitivity and artistry, there is only one choice. Although initially they can be seen as rivals, they are so different that in truth digital and acoustic pianos complement each other. |
