Steinway & Sons – Model A (1905)
A Steinway & Sons model A grand piano that was re-cased for Sir Robert Bird in 1905. The piano was manufactured in Hamburg in the same year, 1905, but the body was changed to fit the Arts & Crafts style with words taken from the Nativity Ode by John Milton.
The piano was in very poor condition when it was received into the workshop. The veneer was damaged, the lyre was falling apart and the piano generally sounded tired and worn out. The restoration took the best part of a year with the case needing time to enable our polisher to source the best materials.
The beauty of restoring Steinways is that the basic design has not changed in a hundred years. You can fit a new action to an older piano, which achieves the touch and feel of a new Steinway. Accordingly, in this restoration we replaced this old action with a new one from Hamburg.
Whenever we replace parts, where possible the replacements are genuine parts from original the manufacturer. With this restoration, the overall result was an instrument that caught the eye and played as if new.
